The Living Landscape Regions is a concept of the Centre for Water, Soil and Landscape, which systematically deals with the planning of sustainable water management in individual regions in the Czech Republic. The goal is to provide comprehensive guidance to rectify deficiencies and improve the condition of landscapes in individual regions, primarily with regard to water retention in the landscape and the prevention of extreme hydrological phenomena. The output consists of the specification of target qualities of individual landscapes corresponding to their needs and expectations, and the proposal of a set of specific and territorially-targeted measures to achieve the target qualities of landscapes, including the setting of the urgency of their implementation. The aim is to provide regions with clear guidance in planning changes in the landscape at the strategic and territorial planning level, including the planning of financial support for the implementation of the proposed measures.
The Living Landscape Regions concept has the following primary aims:
- To improve the water retention capability of landscapes, thereby preventing the negative consequences of extreme hydrological phenomena such as drought or floods.
... The Czech Republic is the “roof of Europe” - it can only manage water that rains on its territory, meaning that such water cannot be wasted. The water that flows beyond our borders is irretrievably lost. - Preservation and development of the production capabilities of landscapes.
... A landscape is an irreplaceable resource. Plundering it may pay off for someone today, but the consequences will definitely be felt by everyone tomorrow. - Increasing the residential and recreational quality of landscapes.
... A landscape is for everyone - the people who work in it and to whom it provides sustenance. For others, it is a place to relax and is the basis of their identity.
The pilot project of the Living Landscape Regions concept is the Central Bohemian Region: A Region of Sustainable Water Management project, which has been under preparation since autumn 2019, on the basis of financial support from the Central Bohemian Region, by one of the expert teams of the Centre for Water, Soil and Landscape, consisting of leading Czech spatial planners, landscapers, hydrologists and GIS specialists. The landscape of the Central Bohemian Region, intensively urbanized and economically utilized, is a suitable space for the pilot application of the living landscapes concept.
